Tips for appropriate and effective naming of Twitter handles
First impression is the last impression. Be it real world or the virtual world.
It is seen that the decision to follow any handle is taken within first 4 to 5 seconds. Although there are many other factors influencing that decision (like the bio, the interests, the no of followers, the DP etc) but the most important function of getting a person on your profile page is done by your handle. It is your brand ambassador.
People conclude a lot of thing about you, just by looking at your handle. Like -
- Your Personality and style
- Your Originality
- Your Creativity
- And the most important, your brand
The most common format of any personal handle is “First name – Last name” and any corporate handle is “Company Name”. But sometimes, it makes the handle look bland.
Here are a few tips that will help make your handle appropriate and effective.
Tips: The following points may be considered while deciding your handle.
The attitude
The Handle Name – Dos and Donts
- Under scores – They are a total no-no. You may use it to differentiate first name and last name, but anything beyond that is a total turn off. And yes, not more than one underscore. (unless creatively used)
- Numbers – Adding a number beyond your handle gives an impression that you are not creative enough and a novice on twitter. Like @Ralphsmith07
- Repetitions – To get somewhere near to the particular handle, many tweeps repeat some alphabets. (just to sound like the handle). Eg - @TechnoGuyyy. Totally Avoid as it gives an impressions of a wannabe.
- Capitalise – Although twitter is generally not bothered about capital letters in a handle, but i personally recommend that in case the handle contains two words, we should capitalise the first alphabets of both the words for better making the handle simple. Like instead of @barackobama it is aptly named as @BarackObama
The length
Creativity
Conclusion
Twitter has a casual way of being. And the handle acts as your signature on this virtual world. It defines you. Be it official, informal or purely casual. And dont worry if you already have a handle. You can change it at any point in time, to suit your style. After all, It is the virtual world’s first point of contact with you.
As they say, “Well begun, is half done”

Great stuff Purvesh. Awesome insights which show I have a lot to learn on Twitter. But if one wants to change a handle, how much does it impact that person's twitter profile? Is it damaging? Or does it make sense in changing it anyway?
Hi vishal, thanks for visiting this blog. Changing the handle does not impact your account in any way. The followers and the following remains the same. however, it is always advised that you inform your followers about the change in the handle name. Also, it is adviced that you retain the old handle and redirect the traffic to your new handle. Check out the website (for easy handle change)- http://bit.ly/nRRfBx. How ever, if you just want the change the first characters into capitals, then you dont have to worry about anything, as it is taken as a inherent change. Go on, change your handle without any inhibitions. Cheers.
I agree. Especially with the underscores and numbers part. very true
@purewaste, Kudos. Well if we talk about dyeing twitter Handle, Indian Twittersphere is very different compared to other countries. We can find ideation, humor, sarcasm, and different signatures though different handle and it really impacts. Being as formal handle it is also good, it states that you are sensitive about professional identity e.g @marismith it is easy to find and mention without navigating to profile.
@vishal Changing handle doesn't lose followers but your identity, probably visibility in search engine for some days, disconnection to your new handle from wherever you have submitted on other platforms like on your blog and other social media portals you have to change all links. If you want to get notice in public go ahead to change handle which will define you. Even I changed my handle @atulvhale to @bigdabrat probably I lost many things but this is just for change. I recommend you not to change handle because people know you by your current handle.
This post most welcomes to new comers and strongly recommended for them.
Nice stuff. Keep coming new ideas.

Hey Atul, Thanks for the comment. Only one thing i would like to add here is that I recently changed my handle from @PurWaste to @PureWaste. And the followers have remained the same. So, it may be a good decision to change the handle if you think the new one is better than the existing one.
Well brought out insights sir.
Very Interesting points Purvesh!!!! Never thought about these aspects!!!! But from a personal point of view, yes - I do avoid cheesy handle names and even cheesier DPs !!!!
The complication for me is having to sync my new twitter handle with my blog. My tweets will stop appearing there until I upd8 the handle there. Plus I'll have to updated it on G+ and all other places where I've used my existing handle. If only I had 1/2 the knowledge you guys have... Anyway, I have changd something on my handle and it looks better. Thanks Atul & Purvesh.
This is a good post purvesh ..
very imformative to twitter users.Though these are all very minute small things its true !
All the instructions are really nice and useful. I will do keep in mind all these things while creating a signature. Thanks !
